Goals and tasks

With psychenet, we want to develop new solutions to care problems of people with mental illnesses and their families, and to scientifically examine the usefulness of these solutions.

In this respect, we have five main focuses:

Awareness and education

The mental health of the Hamburg population should be promoted through improved awareness about mental illnesses. This is achieved among other things through a four-year media campaign (sub-project I) and an internet portal for people with mental health problems, their family members, and experts (sub-project II).

Goal: The population is informed about mental illnesses, enabling them to deal with them appropriately. This also includes a supportive, understanding attitude towards people with mental illnesses and their family members.

Prevention across different areas of disease

The mental health of the Hamburg population should be promoted across different areas of disease. To this aim, among other things, in Hamburg companies, check-ups are offered with regard to psychological burdens and health counselling is provided (sub-project III).

Goal: The population is informed about mental illnesses, enabling them to deal with them appropriately. This also includes a supportive, understanding attitude towards people with mental illnesses and their family members.

Improvement of diagnosis, indication and therapy

The mental health of the Hamburg population should be promoted through an improvement of mental health care. The implementation ensues, among other things, in GP practices. Qualified nursing staff (so-called care managers) support the physicians providing treatment in caring for people with mental illnesses (sub-project IV). In order to improve the diagnosis, allocation to treatment, and therapy, five desease-specific health networks are set up (psychosis, depression, somatoform disorders, anorexia and bulimia, alcohol in adolescence). Further measures will be of benefit for a quicker and more effective treatment (sub-projects VI – X).

Goal: Patients with mental illnesses are diagnosed in good time and are treated comprehensively and quickly with scientifically recognised and clinically effective procedures.

Strengthening of patients and their family members

The mental health of the Hamburg population should be promoted through an improved participation and self-help of patients and their family members. This occurs through counselling by trained patients and relatives (peer to peer), and through promoting family support (sub-project V).

Goal: The position of people with mental illnesses and their family members is strengthened, their participation is fostered, and their resources (self-help, family support groups) are actively supported.

New structures of care

The mental health of the Hamburg population should be promoted through a generally improved structure, effectiveness and economic efficiency of healthcare provision. To this aim, five health networks (psychosis, depression, somatoform disorders, anorexia and bulimia, and alcohol in adolescence) are implemented (sub-projects VI – X).

Goal: The structures of care are optimised, span across different sectors and are available to patients and their family members on the basis of sustainable and transferable business models.
