Self-help and family help
Subproject V "Peer counselling / Self-help and family-help"
Sub-project V promotes the self-help and the participation of family members of patients with chronic mental illnesses. The project is divided into two parts: promoting self-help and promoting family help. Self-help is promoted through the introduction of peer counselling in psychiatric clinics through trained patients and the implementation of self-help groups. Family members of people with mental illness are strengthened through individual coaching by trained family members, through the promotion of family support groups as well as the accompanying training and motivation of employees. This project is the first in Germany to support and promote the patient and family members to such an extent and across the board in a metropolis.
In the framework of sub-project V, eight Hamburg clinics are now offering peer counselling. Patients with mental illnesses and their family members receive counselling and support from trained patient and family peer counsellors.
Through their own psychological crises, peer counsellors have become experts due to their own experiences. In a one-year training programme through EX-IN (Experienced Involvement) or training by the Relatives Association, the peer counsellors have reflected on their own experiences and have developed a mutual knowledge in order to be helpful to others in crisis situations. The peer counsellors are supported by regular coaching and supervision.
