Finding therapy

In Hamburg, there are a multitude of help and treatment offers for adults as well as children and adolescents* with mental health problems.

In your search for the right contact partner, it can be helpful to first of all get an overview of the different facilities in the care system. What distinguishes a psychiatrist from a psychologist or psychotherapist? What is the treatment in a specialist clinic like? You can find answers to these and other questions under Understanding the help system.

The following links lead to offers which should help you in your search for a suitable counselling or treatment offer:

Therapy Guide for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

The Therapy Guide for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Hamburg Department of Health and Consumer Protection is a brochure which lists, on about 200 pages, physicians, psychotherapists, child and adolescent psychotherapists, occupational therapists, counselling centres, self-help groups, rehabilitation facilities, clinics, out-patient departments, residential and assisted living offers and further contact centres.

It is available for download and can also be ordered as a printed paper brochure. Please note: the Therapy Guide for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is only available in German.

Search for physicians and psychotherapists

In the Search for physicians (German) from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Hamburg, you can search for all physicians and psychotherapists in Hamburg.

Under the index "Fachärztliche Versorgung" (specialist physician care), you can find, for example, specialist physicians for psychiatry, for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy, psychological psychotherapists, and child and adolescent psychotherapists.

Here too, you can search specifically for physicians and psychotherapists in a particular neighbourhood or with certain language knowledge or a practice with access for disabled persons.

Search for psychotherapists

In the therapist search engine Psych-Info (German) of the Hamburg Chamber of Psychotherapists, you can search for psychological psychotherapists - persons with a "diploma" degree (MA / MSc equivalent) in psychology who, following their degree, completed training in psychotherapy - and child and adolescent psychotherapist.

There is also the possibility, for instance, to specifically search for therapists in a particular neighbourhood.

Special offers from health insurers

Health insurers sometimes enter into contracts with individual clinics, physicians or medical centres. For the insured person, this can lead, for example, to shorter waiting times.

Your health insurer can tell you whether there are special offers for your illness in Hamburg.

For young adults between 18 and 21 years, mental health services for adults are generally responsible. In exceptional cases, the doctor providing treatment can decide whether a mental health service for children and adolescents is more suitable for a patient. Such a decision can be made, for instance, based on the state of development of the young adult or because the patient is already known to the treatment provider from earlier contacts.
